This memorial website was created to remember our dearest Carole Ann Veney-Booker who was born in Washington, DC on December 19, 1939 and passed away on Tuesday July 22, 2008 at the age of 68.

Booker, who was born Carole Ann Kendrick in Washington DC on December 19, 1939, was employed with the Federal Government for more than 15 years before retiring in 1990 as a result of her debilitating mental and physical illnesses . She also studied foreign languages and journalism at American University following her graduation from Asbury Park High School in 1957. An advocate for education and reading, Booker was in the process of writing an autobiography about her amazing experiences, trials and the tribulations that she encountered while living with paranoid schizophrenia and manic depression for most of her life. The Sherwood Hall Regional Library in Alexandria, VA was where she enjoyed studying and spending much of her time in recent years.

Friends and family who knew her best say she was a good friend to many, very generous, never met a stranger and was very well liked. She was also described as a highly intelligent and resourceful person, to say the least.“She could make you laugh till you cried”, says one friend. “Carole was bold enough to say what others would only think” claimed another. She enjoyed life, she adored her children and cared about people. She never for once allowed her illnesses to keep her down and always had a way of bouncing back. Even in her last moments she was a fighter. She was quoted as saying, “We should examine our own lives for examples of serendipity”

Booker, who comes from a family of successful writers and authors, was preceded in death by her parents Ike and Catherine Kendrick, founders of the former prestigious, “Capitol Spotlight Newspaper” in Washington DC and by her first husband, the late William Veney of Luray, VA.

This proud mother of 3 is survived by daughter Sally Booker-Waller, Director of UCM’s Sacramento Neighborhood Center in Alexandria, VA, son William David Veney of Chestnut Hill, MA, her eldest son Mark E.Veney, TV Engineer for WTVR TV6 in Richmond, VA and her second husband, James L. Booker of Williamsburg, VA. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren; Erikka, Evan, Kyle, Kameko, Kamyah, Aislyn Skye and Jake, two great grandchildren, Trevon and Tyree, a son in-law, Rodney Waller and a host of other relatives and dear friends.

We continue to search for Carole's sister, Bette and other long lost siblings but are happy to have contacted the Veney family. More details soon.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Demaine Funeral Home in Springfield, VA. A memorial service will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Friday August 8 and will be followed by a repast, courtesy of dear friends, Sandra Canery and Walter & Linda Northern at their home. She will be laid to rest in Luray, Virginia by her children at a later date. Special thanks to Pastor Spence who will be our Pastor during the memorial. Thanks to my son Kyle (I love you!) he will bless us with a song that day and also my neice, Erikka and Best Friend Natasha. This will be a celebration! Mom will be so proud!

Thanks to family and friends for all the cards and contributions we've received. It was very comforting. Special thanks to our friends at United Community Ministries (UCM), Sacramento Neighborhood Center, My TeenSpace kids (I love you guys!), State Department, Ms. Tracy, Freda (mother really loved you!). I'm still going through all the cards but thank you all so very much! One of the last things mom ask me a few days before she passed was "does anyone ask about me?" I told her "Yes, mom. Everyone loves you"

I remember it had been two years that I was away from my mom because she was in the hospital. I was sent to live in King & Queen VA with family on my dad's side. Each night I cried because I missed her so bad. I wanted to go home. No one could love me better than my mom. Finally she was scheduled to come visit me in August just before it was time to go back to school. I was about 8 years old and it was the happiest day of my life! I didn't sleep the night before. I woke up early and got ready and all I did was brag that my mommy was coming for me to all my cousins. I kept looking out the window and asking about the time. Then it got late. Really late. She didn't come and I was SO heart broken. I finally had to go to bed. I was awaken a few hours later by the touch of my mom kissing me and slipping jewlry on my fingers. I remember pretending to be asleep. The next morning she seemed to have a lesson plan all laid out for how we would spend our day. I learned to make my bed, she taught me how to braid hair, I learned to plaly jacks and other games, she read to me then I got to try on the new school cloths she bought me...It was an amazing day and it meant the world to me and I will never EVER forget that. I hated to see her leave that night. A year later she returned to take me home to Alexandria, VA in time for Christmas of 1979. I missed a lot of years with my mother growning up but the times we did share were quality moments that seemed to always make up for the lost times.
